The G-spot was unleashed upon the world more than three decades ago, when Beverly Whipple announced on US television that by pressing a particular spot in the vagina, women would have an orgasm.

Since then we have hunted for the G-spot, but many women have come up empty handed and raised the question: Does the G-spot actually exist?

To find out, the science Vs podcast visited Beverly Whipple, to find out how this magical little spot came to be and she informed them she found the g-spot while studying women who thought they were peeing during orgasms.

To study the women, Whipple's team inserted their fingers into the patient's vaginas to feel around for sensitive areas.

"You go all around the vagina wall, from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock, to 6 o'clock and so on, saying 'how does this feel? How does this feel?'

Whipple explains that she scoured the literature and found one article that described what she had seen, that was published in 1950 by Dr. Ernst Grafenberg.

And so, Whipple named the spot, the Grafenberg spot, but eventually shortened it to the G-spot.

But what exactly is the G-spot and how come so many of us women still fail to hunt this baby down?!

Well, in recent research conducted by Helen O'Connell, she found that there "did not seem to show anything in the vaginal wall that would be direct anatomical structure leading to that experience."

Aka, there is nothing special in the location of the vagina where the G-spot apparently should be.

Other scientists looking for the G-spot, haven't had much luck either. One review of the G-spot which was published in 2011, called it "a sort of gynecological UFO: much searched for, much discussed, but unverified by objective means."

Looking into Whipple's original research, it is clear now that she may have jumped the gun a little! One consisted of 47 women, which found they all had sensitive spots but pressing it did not produce orgasms, with another testing 11 women and finding only four had the sensitive spot.

Still though.. at least some women are feeling something right..?

Well as it turns out the research conducted after Whipple's has identified that the G-spot, is in fact not a spot at all. That it's probably just the clitoris, working with part around it, such as the urethra and vagina.

It was also found that the clitoris, shares some of the same blood and nerve supply with the urethra and the walls of the vagina. And later preliminary work, suggest that during sex the clitoris, urethra and vagina may push, prod and excite each other, which ultimately leads to an orgasm.

This infatuation with "finding the G-spot, is something that Whipple regrets unleashing. "I guess we've misled people, because it's more than one little spot, it's a whole area" she says.

So there you have it girls! If you are struggling to find this magical spot it's because it's not so much a specific spot but a whole area within the vagina that needs stimulation!
