Back in 1994, the U.S surgeon general at the time Dr. Joycelyn Elders, was making a speech at the United Nations World AIDS Day, and was asked by an audience member about masturbation's potential for discouraging early sexual activity.
She answered by saying that she thought masturbation was "something that perhaps should be taught" in the sex-education curriculum as part of human sexuality.
She was fired for it.
Many people, especially those whom working in the sexual health or pleasure sector, struggled to make sense of the situation.
In fact, one adult retailer called Good Vibrations decided to create National Masturbation Month, now known as International Masturbation Month, to celebrate healthy masturbation and assist with its normalization in society.
